Do we still need a separate backup if everything is in Microsoft's cloud?

Yes, and this is the misunderstanding we correct most often. Microsoft's job is keeping the service running and the data centres alive; it is not keeping a copy of the folder your accountant deleted in March. Deleted items and old versions sit in recycle bins for a limited window and then they are genuinely gone, and ransomware that encrypts a synced OneDrive folder will cheerfully sync the damage upward.
